We flew on one of Era Airline's two daily trips to Valdez. We were told to sit on the left side of the plane for the best views, and the scenery was as good as promised. As you can see in the photo of the town - and that is the WHOLE town - Valdez is small - about 4500 residents.
A little history - the original Valdez was destroyed by a 4+ minute, 9.2 earthquake on March 27, 1964. The quake triggered an underwater landslide and a resulting tsunami that washed away the waterfront, drowning 33 people. In 1967 the town was condemned when it was discovered it was built on unstable ground, and the town - with 52 relocated buildings - was moved 4 miles to the west.
Dr. Kathryn Hawkins met us at the airport, and it seemed obvious from the start that this was a good fit all the way around. She took us to our apartment and then to dinner at the local Mexican restaurant, Ernesto's Taqueria. Very good.
